UN WOMEN: STOP DOWRYMONGERING
In the subcontinent, forced dowry involves the groom's family coercing the bride's family to pay for material goods. Failure to meet these demands often results in domestic violence, and in severe cases, leads to murder or suicide. In Pakistan, this harmful practice spans all social classes, and existing laws have failed to eradicate it. UN Women aimed to raise awareness and spark a national movement against this practice. They coined the term "Jahezkhori," akin to "Dowrymongering," to stigmatize dowry demands. Using the powerful symbol of henna-decorated hands raised in a "Stop" gesture, they spread the message, calling for an end to this abusive tradition.
